CLINICAL CODING
Clinical coding is translation of clinical documentation about patient care into code format.

A standardized classification system, The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM), is applied in all Australian acute health facilities. It is based on the World Health Organization ICD-10 system, updated with the Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI), Australian Coding Standards (ACS) and ICD-O-3 (International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, 3rd edition).

A clinical coder is responsible for abstracting information from clinical documentation and deciding which diagnoses and procedures meet criteria for coding in accordance with classification conventions, standards and rules. The clinical coder then assigns codes for these diagnoses and procedures.

So the clinical coders should have excellent attention to detail in order to produce high levels of coding accuracy, payment accuracy , quality care and meaningful research. To achieve the expected level of accuracy , clinical coders are developed with comprehensive training, practical oriented coding activities and evaluation criteria.
